Admission Information

B.A. Islamic Studies:

The admission requirements in the Department are clearly stated in accordance with the general provisions of the NUC and the University system. Successful candidates must have five credits at NBAIS or the Senior Secondary School Certificate one of which must be in Islamic Studies, or Grade II Teacher’s Certificates with at least five Merits in the relevant subjects including Islamic Studies.

Any Post-Secondary Diploma in Arts with Islamic studies which includes at Any Post Secondary Diploma in Arts with Islamic studies which includes at least one of the following faculty subjects; Arabic, English, French, Hausa, and History or IJMB with Islamic Studies and at least one subject of the faculty are qualified to be admitted in the Department for the Three Year Degree

Programme. The minimum cut off points is as may be determined by the NUC and the University authority from time to time may be considered for admission. All candidates must have credit in English at the Senior Secondary School Certi嗓cate level. They are also required to have a credit in Arabic otherwise they will have to register and pass Arabic for Islamic studies courses at 100 and200 levels.

B.A. Shari'ah:

The following categories of students will be eligible to apply for admission into the program:

i- To be eligible for admission into four-year B.A. Shari'ah, a candidate must possess:

a) Higher Islamic Studies Certificate (HISC), Senior Islamic Secondary Certificate (SISC) with 嗓ve (5) credits including Arabic and Islamic Studies

b) WAEC, NECO (O' LEVEL), Teacher Grade II with five (5) in relevant Arabic and Islamic Studies

ii- For three-year B.A. Shari'ah: a candidate is required to earn a certificate of Diploma in Shari'ah and Islamic Studies, or relevant IJAMB Pass examination results.

The Department of Islamic and Shariah offers post graduate programmes leading to the award of P.G.D. in Islamic Studies, M.A. (Islamic Studies) and Ph.D. (Islamic Studies). The successful candidates are expected to promote their careers in teaching, administration of the law courts and foreign. The programmes aim at giving the students thorough grounding in the major areas of Islamic Studies and Shari'ah as well as the culture and institutions of Muslim.

An emphasis is given to the study of Islam from its original sources. Candidates for these programmes must be proficient in reading and writing Arabic.

6. Philosophy of the Programmes:

The philosophy of the PGDIS, M.A. and Ph.D. Islamic Studies is to train and develop scholars who will be concerned with the critical study of the Islamic Sciences and all other branches of Islamic learning. Emphasis is placed on those sciences which have the greatest importance in the life of Muslims, with their moral and ethical demands. The emerging scholars will develop the ability to understand, analyze and interpret the Islamic texts in the broader social and cultural context, in line with Islamic jurisprudential requirements.

7. Objectives of the Programmes:

i) To deepen the candidates' critical and analytical understanding of Islamic Studies and its perspectives on mankind with special reference to the original sources of Islam.

ii) To encourage an in-depth study of specific areas within the subject with a view to pursue specialized research.

iii) To produce graduates familiar with the methodological and theoretical developments in the relevant fields of Islamic Studies who will be able to apply their knowledge to their environment and also make their own contribution to universal scholarship.

iv) To help students to develop independent thought and critical judgement and tolerance in the field of Islamic Studies with a view to achieve greater understanding and harmonious living in society.

v) To promote the students鈥 careers in teaching, administration, the law courtsand the foreign services.

vi) To give the students thorough grounding in major areas of Islam as well as the cultures and institutions of Muslim Ummah.

vii) To help candidates whose undergraduate CGPA is not enough for them to be admitted for Masters in Islamic Studies programme.

viii) To prepare the way for the Islamic Studies teachers to get quality teaching training in their working career.

ix) To serve as training ground for the Islamic Studies Students who want to pursue higher degrees.pursue higher degrees.

x) To produce enough man power that will cater for the needs of our secondary schools and tertiary institution.

PGDIS Programme

Candidates who wish to pursue Postgraduate Diploma in Islamic Studies shall have any one of the following qualifications:

i. B.A. Islamic Studies

ii. B.A. Arabic

iii. B.A. Shari'ah.

iv. LLB. Shari'ah.

Any other qualification deemed appropriate by the University Committee on PG admissions.

M.A. Programme

All candidates must possess the minimum of five Ordinary Level Credit Passes which must include English Language and any four of the Arts and Social Science subjects.

Candidates must possess a good Bachelors degree in Religion and its variants (e.g. Religious Studies, Religious and Cultural Studies, Religious Management and Cultural Studies, Islamic or Christian Religious Studies, Theology, etc.), not lower than a Second Class Lower division, from a recognized university.

All candidates shall be subjected to a selection process.

Ph.D Programme Candidate must possess a good Master鈥檚 degree in Religion or its variants from a recognized university, with a CGPA not below 3.5 on a 嗓ve-point scale. Candidates who did not make up to 3.5 will be required to register for the  M.Phil/Ph.D programme. Such candidates must present two seminars and a research proposal for grading and must score a minimum CGPA of 3.5 before proceeding to the Ph.D, otherwise the M.phil Degree should be awarded upon the submission of a thesis. This thesis should be examined following the procedure of a Ph.d thesis
